China-Nepal Flood Disaster Death Toll Rises Above 1,000
More than 1,000 people have been reported dead in floods along the China-Nepal border, while more than 4,400 remain missing across the two countries.
The death toll from devastating floods along the China-Nepal border has surpassed 1,000, with thousands still missing and rescue operations entering a seventh day.
Nepal has recorded at least 987 deaths following Wednesday’s floods, according to the country’s disaster authority, while Chinese state media reported 16 deaths in Tibet. Together, the reported fatalities bring the overall toll to 1,003.
The number of people reported missing in Nepal fell to 3,916 as authorities recovered more bodies and continued search-and-rescue operations. China reported a further 546 people missing, putting the combined number of missing people at 4,462.
Thousands Remain Missing
Nepal’s missing include 583 foreign nationals from more than 30 countries, while China has reported 261 foreigners among those still unaccounted for, representing 23 nationalities.
Indians account for a substantial share of the foreign nationals reported missing in Nepal. New Delhi said 275 Indian citizens and a further 128 people of Indian origin remained missing.

The United States has reported 85 citizens missing, according to the US State Department on Sunday. Reports, including information from Nepal’s tourism authorities and foreign embassies, also put the number of missing Ukrainians at 62, Malaysians at 51, Australians at 42 and British citizens at 33.
The figures remain subject to change as rescue teams continue searching affected areas and authorities work to establish the identities and locations of those unaccounted for.
Bodies Recovered In India
Authorities in India’s Uttar Pradesh state have recovered 17 bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal. Officials believe the bodies may belong to people who died in the floods.
The bodies have not been included in the reported death toll because Indian authorities are still working to identify the victims.
Rescue and recovery operations have continued for a seventh day as authorities in Nepal, China and neighbouring areas deal with the aftermath of the disaster. The latest figures reflect separate reports from national authorities, state media and diplomatic sources and may be revised as identification and recovery efforts continue.
