Stefan Govindraju Granted R200,000 Bail In Tembisa Hospital Fraud Case

Stefan Joel Govindraju was granted bail of R200,000 on Monday morning after appearing before the Gauteng Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court.

Govindraju was arrested on Friday at OR Tambo International Airport after returning from a trip abroad. He faces charges relating to fraud, corruption and money laundering.

The State did not oppose his release on bail, telling the court that Govindraju was cooperating with officials. The court also retained his travel documents.

Alleged R600 Million Syndicate

Govindraju is alleged to have been part of a syndicate involved in a multimillion-rand procurement network at Tembisa Hospital.

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) said last year that three main syndicates had been identified in connection with irregular procurement at the hospital.

Investigators alleged that the syndicate linked to Govindraju siphoned about R600 million through the procurement network.

Govindraju was also identified as a businessman who was allegedly a director of at least 70 entities. His companies were awarded tenders by Tembisa Hospital, according to the investigation.

The allegations have not been tested in court.

Govindraju To Return To Court In September

The case concerns allegations of financial misconduct involving procurement at the Gauteng hospital. Govindraju's arrest followed his return to South Africa from abroad.

The State's decision not to oppose bail was based, in part, on his cooperation with officials, while the court's retention of his travel documents formed part of the conditions surrounding his release.

Govindraju is due back in court on 29 September.
