SARB Launches R2 Coins Honouring Charlotte Maxeke And The Women Of 1956

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has launched two new R2 coins commemorating the legacy of Charlotte Maxeke and the women who participated in the 1956 Women’s March.

One of the coins features a profile of Maxeke, marking 125 years since she became the first black South African woman to obtain a university degree.

The second coin depicts women gathered in front of the Union Buildings, representing the historic 1956 Women’s March.

Coins Highlight Women’s Role In South Africa’s History

Speaking at the launch, SARB Governor Lesetja Kganyago reflected on the role women played in the liberation struggle and the importance of recognising their contributions.

Kganyago said women’s leadership, sacrifice and achievements had too often been overlooked.

“Too often, women’s leadership, sacrifice and achievements are overlooked. By placing Charlotte Maxeke and the women of 1956 on our circulation coins we affirm that women’s contributions are central to the story of South Africa.”

First Commemorative Circulation Coins To Feature Women

Kganyago said the new coins also serve as a reminder of the role women played in shaping South Africa’s struggle and liberation.

“The coins remind us that the story of the struggle and liberation cannot be told without acknowledging the women who helped shape it. These two coins are the first commemorative circulation coins to feature women.”

The two R2 coins therefore combine a recognition of Maxeke’s educational achievement with a commemoration of the women associated with the 1956 Women’s March.
