National Population Commission (NPC) Chairman Dr Aminu Yusuf has reportedly died in Abuja, less than a year after President Bola Tinubu appointed him to lead the commission.

A source within the commission said Yusuf died at Nizamiya Hospital in Abuja after Friday prayers.

The source did not provide details about the circumstances surrounding his death but said his remains had been taken to Minna, Niger State, for burial on Friday evening.

The reported death comes after Yusuf was said to have collapsed on several occasions at his office and during public engagements.

Yusuf Previously Collapsed At Public Event

Yusuf collapsed on 13 March during a press briefing and the official launch of the APLS 13 Report, according to the supplied material.

He was reportedly experiencing difficulty breathing and remained seated while medical doctors attending the event intervened.

He was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

The source did not say whether the earlier incidents were connected to Yusuf’s reported death.

As of the time of filing, the National Population Commission had not issued an official statement confirming his death.

Appointed NPC Chairman By Tinubu

Tinubu appointed Yusuf as NPC chairman in 2025, after which the Senate confirmed his appointment.

He was sworn in by the President on 3 December 2025 alongside two other members of the NPC board. The State House identified Yusuf as 65 years old at the time of his swearing-in.

The NPC subsequently confirmed that he had formally assumed office as chairman following the swearing-in ceremony in Abuja.

Yusuf held a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

According to the State House, he also held a doctorate in International Relations from Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

Yusuf’s reported death would come less than a year into his tenure at the commission, which is responsible for population data and the registration of vital events in Nigeria.
