Judgment Expected In Kirsten Kluyts Murder Trial
The Johannesburg High Court is expected to deliver judgment on Friday in the trial of Bafana Mahungela, who is accused of murdering pregnant Sandton teacher Kirsten Kluyts in 2023.
Judgment is expected on Friday in the murder trial of the man accused of killing pregnant Sandton teacher Kirsten Kluyts nearly three years ago.
The Johannesburg High Court is due to deliver its judgment in the case against 23-year-old Bafana Mahungela after the matter was postponed earlier this week following the partial delivery of the court’s ruling.
Mahungela has pleaded not guilty to charges including kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder and attempted rape.
Kluyts, a teacher at Delta Park High School, was found dead along a jogging trail in George Lea Park, Sandton, in October 2023.
She had been participating in a local sporting event before her death.
State Relies On Surveillance Footage
The State’s case relied in part on surveillance footage that prosecutors argued placed Mahungela at the scene before and after the attack.
Prosecutors also argued that the fatal assault lasted approximately eight minutes.

Mahungela has previously admitted that he undressed Kluyts and moved her body, but denied killing her.
His version and the evidence presented by the prosecution have formed part of the issues considered by the court in determining whether the State has proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Post-Mortem Findings Presented To Court
A post-mortem examination found that Kluyts died from blunt-force injuries to the head and strangulation.
The medical findings formed part of the evidence presented during the trial as the State sought to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
The court must determine whether the evidence presented by the prosecution establishes Mahungela’s guilt on the charges against him.
Court To Complete Judgment
The matter was postponed to Friday after the court partially delivered its judgment earlier this week.
The final ruling is expected to determine whether Mahungela is guilty or not guilty of the charges he faces.
Until the judgment is completed, Mahungela remains presumed innocent.
