Police Corruption Committee Faces Further Delay After Missing Quorum
The parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating police corruption has postponed its work again after failing to secure enough members to form a quorum.
The committee was unable to proceed with its draft report on Wednesday night after only five members attended the meeting, leaving it one member short of the required quorum.
The latest delay follows another extension granted by National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza after the committee failed to complete its draft report by the deadline last Friday.
Didiza subsequently extended the committee’s deadline to 30 October, giving Members of Parliament additional time to finalise the report.

Wednesday’s meeting was intended to be the committee’s first sitting under the new deadline. However, MPs from most political parties did not attend.
Committee chairperson Soviet Lekganyane said proceeding without a quorum could undermine the integrity of the committee’s work.
“There are five of us in the meeting, we run short of one member to have a quorum. Let me hear from yourselves. There has been a proposal that we must reschedule.”
Committee To Reschedule Its Work
Members agreed that the meeting should be postponed rather than continuing without the required number of MPs.
The committee acknowledged that several members are occupied with party business linked to the elections, which contributed to the poor attendance.
It will consider scheduling future meetings earlier in the day in an effort to improve attendance and allow the committee to continue processing its draft report.
Report Deadline Extended To 30 October
The committee had initially been expected to complete its draft report by last Friday. It sought additional time from Didiza after failing to meet that deadline.
The Speaker granted the extension until 30 October, but the failure to establish a quorum at the first meeting following the extension has added another delay to the process.
The committee must now reschedule its meeting as it continues work towards completing the outstanding report.
