Kaizer Chiefs Hold Richards Bay To Rain-Soaked Draw

Kaizer Chiefs were forced to fight back after Richards Bay took the lead on two occasions, with both sides ultimately having to settle for a point after a competitive encounter.

Xulu Gives Richards Bay Early Advantage

Richards Bay made the stronger start and went ahead in the eighth minute after Nqaba Xulu capitalised on a defensive error.

The Richards Bay forward charged down a clearance from Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, with the deflection sending the ball into the net. It was Xulu's second goal of the season.

Chiefs responded 11 minutes later after Richards Bay defender Thembela Sikhakhane was penalised for handball inside the area. Lebohang Maboe converted the resulting penalty to restore parity.

The visitors continued to show attacking intent, but Richards Bay regained the lead before half-time. A dangerous delivery from a corner found Xulu, who rose to head the ball beyond Petersen and towards the far post.

Chiefs Fight Back Again

Richards Bay began the second half with renewed attacking purpose and came close to extending their advantage when Thulani Gumede curled an effort towards the near corner. Petersen reacted well to keep the attempt out.

Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz then turned to his substitutes, bringing on new signing Faiz Abrahams alongside Wandile Duba and Asanele Velebayi in an effort to alter the course of the match.

The changes paid dividends in the 77th minute. Velebayi broke forward down the left before cutting the ball back for Siphesihle Ndlovu, who finished from close range to make it 2-2.

Neither Side Finds A Winner

The late stages produced further attempts from distance as both teams searched for a decisive goal.

Neither side, however, was able to find the breakthrough before the final whistle, leaving Chiefs and Richards Bay with a share of the points after an eventful evening in KwaMashu.
