Lions Pay Tribute To Their Teammate
Lions Rugby Company chief executive Rudolf Straeuli expressed the organisation’s grief at the loss of a player who had recently become part of the squad.
“We are heartbroken by the passing of Hyron. He was not only a gifted rugby player, but also a cherished member of our Lions family, having recently joined us this season,” Straeuli said.
Speaking on behalf of Lions chairman Altmann Allers, the board and the wider organisation, Straeuli extended his condolences to Andrews’ wife, Maiglin, their young sons, Hendrix and Emerson, and the rest of the family.
The club also appealed for the family’s privacy to be respected as they grieve.
From The Sharks To English Rugby
Andrews spent more than a decade associated with the Sharks, establishing himself within the Durban-based franchise before moving to England.
In 2024, he joined Sale Sharks in the English Premiership on a short-term deal from the Sharks. His performances led to a contract extension, and he went on to make 45 appearances for the English club.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his wife Maighlin, his young sons, friends, current and former teammates and everyone at the Lions during this incredibly difficult time,” the Sharks said.

Andrews’ death has brought an end to a playing career that included stints with three professional clubs across South Africa and England.
As the Lions prepare to face La Rochelle, the team will do so following the loss of a teammate who had only recently joined the organisation.
The Lions have said further information about an appropriate tribute will be communicated in due course, while the family has requested privacy during this difficult period.
